Load Index

Tire load index is a numerical code that corresponds to the maximum load a tire can carry under specified operating conditions. It normally appears near the end of the tire size description.

What the load index means

The code is not the load value itself. It must be matched to a standardized load-index chart to find the corresponding capacity. Each tire supports part of the vehicle’s total weight, including passengers, cargo and accessories.

Why the correct rating matters

Replacement tires should meet or exceed the load capability specified for the vehicle and application. Choosing an inadequate rating can lead to excessive heat, poor handling or tire failure. Light-truck tires may also use load ranges and inflation tables that require additional interpretation.

Where to check

Use the vehicle information placard, owner’s manual and tire manufacturer’s technical data rather than relying only on the old tire. Modified vehicles, towing and heavy loads may require professional confirmation of wheel, tire and axle capacities.
