Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds between a tire and the road, reducing or interrupting direct tread contact. The driver may experience lighter steering, reduced response or a sudden loss of traction.
What contributes to hydroplaning
Vehicle speed, water depth, tread design, remaining tread depth and tire pressure all influence the risk. Worn or underinflated tires may be less effective at moving water away from the contact area. Standing water and wheel tracks can increase the amount of water the tread must manage.
How tread helps
Longitudinal grooves, lateral channels and open tread areas provide paths for water to escape. These features cannot eliminate the risk when conditions or speed exceed the tire’s ability to disperse water.
What to do
Reduce speed before reaching standing water and avoid abrupt steering, acceleration or braking inputs. If hydroplaning begins, ease off the accelerator and keep steering inputs smooth while the tires regain contact. Vehicle-specific safety guidance should always take priority.
